We are pleased to announce the 12th Joint European Summer School on Technology Enhanced Learning, to take place from Monday, June 20th to Friday, June 24th, 2016 in Estonia. Pre-summer school activities are organized all day on Sunday, June 19th. The summer school aims to encourage participants to adopt a critical stance in thinking about the role of technologies in providing opportunities for learners and the potential of these opportunities in terms of learning. The summer school provides a stimulating learning environment where participants are given opportunities to: develop research skills; increase their knowledge base; collaborate with others in their own and complementary research areas; engage in debate; have access to experts in the field; and discuss their own work. The programme covers topics from a broad range of domains which contribute to advancing the field of Technology Enhanced Learning. TEL research projects are encouraged to provide doctoral candidates with a perspective of the state-of-the-art research under study in their working groups. The programme will also include practical and methodological workshops as well as opportunities for doctoral candidates to develop their personal research and discuss their doctoral work. Upon request we can provide a certificate for the institution of the participant stating how many lectures / workshops and individual work was delivered. For this summer school the overarching theme is learning analytics.

Local Organiser

The local organiser of the JTEL summer school 2016 is the Centre for Educational Technology of Tallinn University (www.tlu.ee). Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is one of the most popular tourist destinations and cruise stops in the Baltic Sea. Located on Estonia`s northern coast on the Gulf of Finland, only 80km south of Helsinki, Tallinn has been a meeting point from its very early days. Tallinn sits at the crossroads between East and West, which has marked its development since it’s blossoming as a Hanseatic town. The days of Hansa are brought to mind in Tallinn`s proud merchant houses from 14th – 16th Century, the nearly 2-km-long town wall, and the majestic Town Hall. Today Tallinn is viewed as a town of culture both on local and international arena and the economic hub of the new Northern Europe combining the Nordic countries and the Baltics. Together with the city of Turku in Finland, Tallinn is European Cultural Capital in 2011. Estonia is part of the European Union and has joined the Euro zone in 2011.

Venue

Venue for the JTEL summer school 2016 is Roosta Holiday Village, located 98 km from Tallinn to East right next to a nice sandy beach of the Baltic Sea. Roosta Holiday Village offers various services (sauna, massage etc), accommodation in cottages and delicious catering, everything in the same place. The whole holiday village is booked for summer school participants exclusively. The participants will be able to be together from morning till evening every day, getting to know each other better. Hotel offers to summer school participants full board accommodation single, double and triple rooms, high-speed wifi connectivity in all rooms, one large and three smaller seminar rooms, various sports facilities (incl. surfing, adventure park, bowling, mini golf, tennis, rowboats).

Participants are expected to arrive on Saturday, June 18th, at the Tallinn Airport, which is relatively well connected with all major European cities. It is easy to travel to Tallinn with Lufthansa, SAS or AirBaltic, also low-cost connections with RyanAir and easyJet are available. An alternative would be flying to Helsinki and taking ferry to Tallinn. Tallinn Airport is very close to the city centre (5-10 min by taxi) and less than 100 km from Roosta. The bus transfer from Tallinn to Roosta will be organised for all participants on Sunday, 19th June, as well as the return on Saturday, 25th June.
