“WHY metadata for MY resources?”

Short Description


The lecture proposed will present some basic background on metadata for all the participants to reach a common level of understanding on the topic. In this part, existing metadata standards will be presented and focus will be given to IEEE LOM and the process of profiling it. Having established a minimum knowledge on metadata, focus will be given on their use in Technology Enhanced Learning in general. Examples of the use of metadata in TEL will be given, and the participants will have the chance to use existing platforms to perform metadata-based searches through educational material. During the course of the lecture the attendants will be asked to use their laptops to participate in a hands-on exercise providing metadata for given resources. Closing the session, a discussion will be held, focusing on the lecture experience and the importance of high-quality metadata.

The aims of the lecture include:

• To familiarize the participants with the concept of metadata
• To showcase the functionalities offered through the deployment of metadata in educational portals and platforms
• To provide an actual experience of providing metadata for a resource using an annotation tool
To emphasize on the importance of providing not only metadata, but “quality metadata” instead

Lecturer Biography


Nikos Palavitsinis holds a diploma from Athens University of Economics and Business from the Department of Management Science and Technology with a specialization on Information Systems Management. He also holds a M.Sc. on Geographical Information Systems from the Agricultural University of Athens and he is currently working on his PhD. From 2005 up to today he is a member of the Informatics laboratory of the Agricultural University of Athens. From 2008 he has beeb working on EU-Funding Initiatives dealing mostly with metadata and repositories. He is currently a PhD student in University of Alcala working/studying on Issues of Metadata Quality.

Hannes Ebner is currently performing his PhD studies at the department of Media Technology and Graphic Arts at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden. His research focus lies on loose and non-invasive collaboration, metadata interoperability and Semantic Web technologies, in particular applications of Linked Open (Meta)Data in the context of Technology Enhanced Learning. He is also one of the leading architects and developers behind numerous Open Source projects, such as the collaboration server Collaborilla, the concept browser Conzilla, the SCAM metadata and resource management framework, and the web-based electronic portfolio application Confolio.

Dr. Manouselis has a diploma in Electronics & Computer Engineering, a M.Sc. in Operational Research, as well as, a M.Sc. in Electronics & Computer Engineering, all from the Technical University of Crete (Greece). In 2008, he has obtained a PhD on the application of metadata & semantics for social information retrieval of agricultural resources from the Informatics Laboratory of the Agricultural University of Athens (Greece). From January 2008, he is a researcher at the Greek Research & Technology Network. During 2001-2004 he has been a member of the Informatics & Telematics Institute of the Centre for Research & Technology (CERTH-ITI), Greece. During 2000-2001 he has been a member of the Decision Support Systems Laboratory of the Technical University of Crete, Greece. He has participated (as a project manager, technical manager or research associate) in several EU-funded (IST, Leonardo, eContent, eContentplus, ICT PSP) and National Research initiatives. Together with Riina Vuorikari and Erik Duval he has co-chaired a Workshop on Social Information Retrieval in Technology-Enhanced Learning during EC-TEL'07 (http://infolab-dev.aua.gr/sirtel2007/), and has co-edited a Special Issue on Social Information Retrieval for Technology-Enhanced Learning (http://journals.tdl.org/jodi/issue/view/66) of the Journal of Digital Information (JoDI).
